Lacquered Hyotan with spider web
This water container made out from a Hyotan (Japanese gourd) is nicely decorated with a motive of a spider and her web in which she caught something like a mosquitoe! Just perfect for summer time!
In Japan Hyotan is an auspicious product of the farm, like Nasu (eggplant) or Daikon (Japanese radish). Hyotan are widely used as traveling water container although most of them are not lacquered. Meiji era.
