Satsuma is a type of Japanese earthenware pottery originally from the Satsuma domain in southern Ky?sh?. After being displayed at the international exhibition in Paris in 1867, it became very popular as an export item, and was then imitated in several kilns all over Japan. Very refined Satsuma was produced in Kyoto, Yokohama or by Kutani kilns in Ishikawa Prefecture.
Hon-Satsuma like this one refers to Satsuma produced in the original province of southern Ky?sh?. Meiji era.
