Nanbanjin plate
Nanbanjin have been a fashion design at different period of Edo period in lacquer, porcelain or folding screen design. Nanbanjin means "barbarian from the south" and the term has been commonly used for describing Dutch sailors and even Portuguese. Here is a classic example of Nanbanjin design, with a Dutch sailor depicted standing on a boat and using a telescope. Meiji era.
