A four-tiered lacquer Hanami-Jubako
Jyu-Bako means "Japanese traditional tiered food boxes" and Hanami means "cherry blossom viewing party". The two words are shorten in Hanami-ju. This set with a moon shaped bottle made of tin for sake, was carried in a park or a garden for a picnic while admiring the new cherry-blossom.
The exterior of the box is decorated with a cherry flowers design in golden hiramakie, on a red background; each box has a nashiji lacquer interior. Japanese picnic boxes traditionally have four sections, one each for rice, fish, vegetables and pickles. Late 19th century.
