A very rare Edo "hyakume dansu" or
"one hundred eyes" pharmacy-chest (kusuridansu)
with almost one hundred marked drawers (99). Kusuridansu
and their multiple drawers were used to store
medical herbs and powders. These handsome, dynamic
pharmacy chests are now very difficult to find
in even half decent condition, making this one
a real, rare find. Under the tansu is written
"built in Bunka 5th years"(1808) and
a couple ideograms difficult to read, maybe the
name of a shop.
